Sensitive skin care 101

Sensitive skin refers to skin that is more prone to irritation, redness, dryness, or allergic reactions when exposed to various factors like certain skincare products, environmental conditions, or even stress. People with sensitive skin may experience discomfort, stinging, burning, or tightness after using products that are too harsh for their skin type.

Causes of Sensitive Skin:

  • Environmental factors: Extreme weather conditions (hot or cold), pollution, and sun exposure can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Skin conditions: Conditions like eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis can make the skin more sensitive.
  • Allergic reactions: Ingredients in skincare products or cosmetics, like fragrances or preservatives, can cause sensitivity.
  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations, like during pregnancy or menopause, can lead to sensitive skin.
  • Diet and lifestyle: Stress, lack of sleep, or a poor diet can also contribute to skin sensitivity.

How to Treat Sensitive Skin:

  1. Use gentle, fragrance-free products: Choose cleansers, moisturizers, and serums that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. Avoid products with alcohol, artificial fragrances, or harsh chemicals.

  2. Test new products first: Always patch-test a small amount of a new product on a small part of your skin (like behind the ear) before applying it all over your face.

  3. Hydrate and moisturize: Sensitive skin often requires extra moisture. Look for moisturizers with soothing ingredients like kokum butter, chamomile and perilla oil.

  4. Avoid over-exfoliating: Exfoliating too often can irritate sensitive skin. Stick to gentle exfoliators and avoid physical scrubs with rough particles.

  5. Protect from sun exposure: Always wear sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect against UV rays, which can trigger sensitivity and damage your skin.

  6. Keep your skin calm: Look for products with ingredients like chamomile, calendula, or oatmeal, which can help soothe irritation.

  7. Use lukewarm water: Avoid hot showers or splashing your face with hot water, as it can dry out or irritate sensitive skin.

  8. Be mindful of makeup: Opt for mineral-based makeup products that are often less likely to cause irritation, and make sure to remove makeup gently with a hydrating cleanser.

  9. Diet and hydration: Stay hydrated and eat a diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins to support skin health.

If your sensitivity is persistent or worsens, it’s a good idea to consult a dermatologist to identify underlying causes and get personalized recommendations.
